The Chaplain and the Churchwardens of  St. Nicholas Chaplaincy of the Anglican Church in Finland are searching for a part-time Director of Music. The music ministry program, which has until now been run solely by volunteers, is looking for a Director who can breathe new life into the program. The program principally consists of the St. Nicholas Singers, an adult choir which already sings a psalm, acclamation, and anthem every Sunday (in addition to leading the congregational singing). The chaplaincy is looking for a dedicated musician who can not only continue developing the adult choir, but create a children’s choir to involve the younger members of our chaplaincy.

Title: Director of Music


  • Conduct the St. Nicholas Singers (adult choir) at two Sunday liturgies per month, as well as some festivals (negotiable)
  • Create and direct a children’s choir at one Sunday liturgy per month
  • Rehearse both choirs on a weekly basis (ideally on the same evening)
  • Organize the scheduling of independent musical ensembles (from the chaplaincy community) to provide music during communion at one Sunday liturgy per month
  • Manage the accompanist roster
  • Select the hymns, psalms, and other liturgical music (in coordination with the Chaplain)
  • Update the website with information relating to music ministry
  • Participate in the active recruitment of new members and overall development of the music ministry program
  • Be an active member of the St. Nicholas community
  • Undergo a background check in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Church of England

Mandatory skills and qualifications:

  • Fundamental music proficiency, including the ability to read and write music
  • Proficiency in voice and piano
  • Experience in Christian liturgies
  • Comfort leading groups of both adults and children
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluency in English

Other desirable skills and qualifications:

  • Organ proficiency
  • Degree in music or other formal training in music
  • Knowledge of the Anglican choral tradition/repertoire
  • Knowledge of relevant repertoire for children’s choirs
  • Ability to compose (e.g. psalms, mass settings, etc.)
  • Already having an established toiminimi (sole trader) in Finland

Location: Mikael Agricolan kirkko (Mikael Agricola Church), Helsinki
Type of employment: Part-time, contract
Duration of contract: 5 months (January – May inclusive), with the possibility of renewal in September
