Dear [subscriber:firstname | default:reader]

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

We continue our Eastertide celebrations this coming Sunday by streaming our service as usual. There’s also a possibility to attend “virtual church coffee”, after the service, on Zoom.

Our Sunday School teachers have worked very hard throughout the winter to bring hope, joy and Christian education to many families who attend the online Sunday School regularly. This is a vital and essential part of our ministry. We hope to celebrate together in-person with the Sunday School on the Day of Pentecost, 23rd May 2021 at the courtyard of Mikael Agricola Church. We are expecting the current restrictions to have been lifted by that time.

I would invite those who wish to attend an online Confirmation School to contact me as soon as possible. My aim is to run a course which would gather six times before midsummer. The meetings are most likely done using video-conferencing. I aim to have the first gathering of this confirmation group on Wednesday 12th May at 18:00. At the moment we expect the Bishop to visit Finland in October and a Service of Confirmation would be arranged then.

I know some children are attending Finnish Lutheran Confirmation classes this summer. This is absolutely fine and I support families who have made this decision. It is also possible for those children to be confirmed by an Anglican Bishop - please contact me for details. There’s no age limit for attending though I am encouraging children born in 2007 or later to wait for future classes. In general the year when a child has their fifteenth birthday is an ideal time for confirmation.

I wish you all a happy Vappu (1st May celebrations). As the sunlight increases rapidly may it bring warmth and hope and remind us about the love of God which shines to all of his creatures. These words are from the Venerable Bede, whom the Church commemorates on 25th May: “Christ is the morning star who when the night of this world is past brings to his saints the promise of the light of life and opens everlasting day.”

Blessings,
Tuomas

A new book for Summer, by our very own Linda Jämsén!

Odyssey of Love: A Memoir of Seeking and Finding
I’m delighted that after working on Odyssey for many years, often while facing difficult personal/family struggles, it will be launched into the world on June 1st, also my birthday. For more information, visit my website: www.lindajamsen.com, where you can download a free advanced copy. Or, pre-order your book at Amazon, which recently picked Odyssey as its #2 choice in Hot New Releases in Eastern Europe Travel. If you would like me to meet with your book club or social group to discuss Odyssey, I would be happy to attend. (There are book discussion questions inside.) Many thanks for your friendship and support! I hope to see you soon. Linda

Here is an excerpt from the book:
When Linda doesn’t receive the marriage proposal she’d long been expecting on her 41st birthday, she leaves her partner and job in Boston and moves to Europe in search of her true love, a “tall man with glasses,” who will be revealed to her through a “Russian icon.” In Budapest, land of her musical idol, Franz Liszt, she reinvents herself as an English teacher reignites her passion for music, and encounters attractive, but unsuitable suitors while traveling in Europe. It is only when her romantic quest joins with her deepening spiritual one that she finds her future husband—here—in Helsinki!

Volunteers needed!

Our Church relies on volunteers to keep it going! As we plan our return to Church please have a think about how you might be able to contribute to the life of our Church. These are some of the roles that we need to fill:

Vergers/Welcoming committee!
Servers
Technical Team - helping to stream services
Coffee Servers
Readers and Intercessors Coordinator
Council Members*

*Council members are elected at the AGM on 30th May. The Council is our decision making body and plays a vital role in how the Church is run and in the shaping of its future. Meetings will take place every couple of months on a weekday evening over zoom, they last approximately 1- 1.5 hrs.

Please contact Sarah in the office (office@anglican.fi) to let us know what you would like to volunteer for, or if you want more information on what the roles entail.

Thy Kingdom Come - Have you chosen your 5 people?

Join the wave of prayer among Christians of all denominations by choosing 5 people to pray for between Ascension and Pentecost.

Be inspired to take part by The Very Revd Dr John Sentamu! You can see his short video here:

Can you spare 10 minutes?

Eetu Karjalainen, an Information studies student at the University of Oulu, is doing an Internet survey for his master's thesis about prayer among the Christians in Finland. PRAY WITH US

We pray particularly at this time for the people of India, who are experiencing a devastating wave of coronavirus. Please keep in your prayers members of our congregation who have family and friends in India.
I will say of the Lord, ‘You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust’.
God of power and might we lift our brothers and sister in India to you.
We pray for your protection,
We pray for your provision,
We pray for the nations of earth to have compassion.
When people are in need, you are our refuge.
When people are scared, you are our refuge.
When people are mourning, you are our refuge.
Compassionate God, draw close to those who seek your refuge today.
Amen.
