Dear reader

As I am writing this, the Government has just introduced a new legislation to the Parliament on restricting movement at the areas where the pandemic situation is most severe. This legislation might make it impossible for volunteers to come to church to assist in the steaming of church services. This, obviously, would have an impact on what we have planned for our streamed service during the Holy Week and Easter. We will inform you if changes occur.

If one would like to find something useful from this situation, it is perhaps that we are given a very real and concrete context for our preparations for Easter. This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday when we celebrate Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem. But very quickly, in the middle of the service, after raising the palm crosses – as a sign of triumph, hope and blessing – our faces turn down as we hear the passion narrative according to St Mark.

The Easter message is that of joy and hope in the new creation. I am confident that after more than a year in lockdown this Easter and springtime will be for us a time of new hope and new beginnings. Christ is with us now and forever.

In Christ,

(Thank you to Jeremy for his drawing of Mikael Agricola Church)

Sunday School & Youth Group: Last Sunday
we learnt about the prophet Jeremiah. We heard about God's promise of a new covenant, that we will be forgiven and God will write his law on our hearts (Jeremiah 31: 31-34). We made bookmarks to remind us of God's promise

This Sunday we will be exploring the events of Holy Week together.

New Office Manager Role:

Treasured Parishioners,

Your church council has just hired a new office manager to assist Fr. Tuomas with the administrative tasks inherent with the smooth running of our church. We sent out an invitation (social media) to apply for the open position. This new position has more hours than what Virpi fulfilled . As Virpi's time of employment went by, we realized that the limited hours she put in were not enough to take care of the administrative needs we have.

We had over 20 responses and inquiries. The council looked at every C.V. that was submitted. We were then able to narrow the choices down to 5 applicants. Fr. Tuomas, Johnson, and I then conducted interviews with each applicant via ZOOM online.

All of the candidates were experienced in administrative work and spoke English well, with rudimentary Finnish skills. Most knew of the Anglican church, more or less.
They were comfortable with the work situation and hours.

After the interviews were complete we decided that Sarah Tahvanainen would be the best fit. She obviously knows St. Nicholas’s congregation, having lead the Sunday school for several years, and doing an outstanding job. Sarah is very eager to help Tuomas with these administrative tasks that take his time from ecclesiastical pursuits.
She has a heart to reach out to all of our parishioners to make sure that no one feels left adrift during this extraordinary pandemic lock down time.

We look forward to having Sarah working with Fr. Tuomas in St. Nicholas’s office. Look for the new programs and ideas that the Holy Spirit inspires her to do.

God’s blessings to all. Your church Warden, Arne Laitinen
Covid Update: Due to the ongoing pandemic, services will continue online until further notice. We will update you as and when we are able to welcome you back into Church again.

True and humble king,
hailed by the crowd as Messiah:
grant us faith to know you and love you,
that we may be found beside you
on the way of the cross,
which is the path of glory.
