The Deanery Synod of the Anglican Churches in Nordic and Baltic states begins in Helsinki today. Clergy and lay representatives will meet to discuss matters around the Porvoo Communion, peace and religious freedom, migration and racial justice. On Saturday evening, 9th October at 17:00 the Synod guests attend a Eucharist in Porvoo Cathedral on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the signing of Porvoo Declaration. This service is open for all, so if you happen to be near Porvoo, please do join us!
On Sunday, 10th October at 10 a.m. Bishop David Hamid will confirm candidates from our Church in Helsinki, the White Nile Congregation, and a candidate who arrives from Tallinn. The Synod guests will also attend the service. We are arranging a pot-luck lunch after the service to which Synod guests have been invited. Please do consider joining in the service and bringing something to share with others.

Pot Luck Lunch this Sunday!
After the service we are having a Pot-Luck Lunch and we need your help to make this a fitting celebration! Please bring a dish to share if you are able to - such as a quiche, salad, bread and cheese, soup, a rice or pasta dish. Desserts are also welcome! Please bring any contributions down to the kitchen before the service, if possible. Many thanks, Sarah

BEETROOT AND POTATO SOUP WITH FETA - Diana Webster
1 roll of pureed beetroot and potato
1-2 garlic cloves or 1 onion or shallot1
Crumbled feta cheese to sprinkle on top or a generous spoonful of crème fraiche instead.
Fry the garlic or onion in some oil or butter in large saucepan till transparent. Add hot water and stock cube and stir till cube has dissolved. Add puree (be careful, it easily squirts everywhere out of its casing). Stir and simmer (for approx10-15 mins). Taste for more seasoning. Horseradish goes well with beetroot, so you can add a teaspoonful of horseradish cream earlier to the soup instead of the feta, but some people don’t like the taste.
JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE SOUP WITH BACON BITS
1 roll of pureed Jerusalem artichokes (maaartis…)
1-2 garlic cloves or 1 small onion or shallot
1 beef or chicken stock cube
Small packet of chopped bacon (omit if you want it all veggie, or try adding lemon peel, a bay leaf and a sprig of rosemary)
About 1 dl or more of thin cream
Chopped parsley to sprinkle on top if liked.
Proceed as above, but fry the bacon bits with the garlic and do not puree at end. A word of warning: Jerusalem artichokes cause wind!

Christmas Cards are on Sale!
Katrina and I started sorting Christmas cards this week! We may have hummed a few carols whilst we worked! David B has kept us well supplied - much effort and care has gone into upcycling a wonderful variety of cards, the profits of which go to the work of our Church. We hope to have a good selection out this Sunday and all the way up until Christmas! You can pay for the cards by cash at coffee and soon we will have a mobile pay option up and running!
Please let Katrina know if you could help with sorting more cards in preparation for the Bazaar! Thanks, Sarah

Please let Sarah or the Church Wardens know if you are able to help at the Bazaar! We need volunteers to sell cards, tombola tickets, books and food/drinks in the cafe! If you are willing to organise the tombola or donate a prize that would also be much appreciated! Please help to spread the word and ask friends and family to save the date! If you would like a flyer/poster please ask Sarah.
